Rome wins for a first trip to Italy, but Naples wins if you want Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and the best pizza on the planet, and the two cities are only 55 to 70 minutes apart by high-speed train. Rome gives you the Colosseum, the Vatican and a polished tourist setup.

Naples gives you grit, lower prices and a 30-minute train to Pompeii. For most Americans with a week, the right answer is Rome first, then Naples as your southern base.

The fast train makes this a “both” decision

The high-speed line covers 222 km. Italo runs 31 departures a day and does the trip in 55 minutes, with fares from USD 17 (EUR 14.90). Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa runs more than 100 trains a day in a little over an hour.

Book a few weeks out and you can find seats from USD 11 (EUR 9.90) on Trainline; leave it to the day of travel and fares can climb past USD 70.

Both trains run between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale, so you are city center to city center with no airport security. The real question is where to sleep and how many nights each city gets.

What Rome does better

Rome is the stronger city for monuments and museums. A standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill ticket costs USD 20 (EUR 18), or USD 27 (EUR 24) for the Full Experience with the arena floor. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel cost USD 28 (EUR 20 plus a EUR 5 online booking fee) if you skip the line by booking ahead, which you should.

Rome is also easier for a first-timer. Signage is better, English is more widely spoken and the historic center is walkable. If you want a full sightseeing list, our breakdown of the best things to do in Rome covers the essentials and the order to do them in.

One new cost to know: since February 2026, non-residents pay a USD 2 (EUR 2) access fee to stand at the Trevi Fountain during set hours.

What Naples does better

Naples wins on food, value and access to the Bay of Naples. Neapolitan pizza was born here, and a margherita in the historic center is a cheap, serious meal. It feels like a working city rather than a museum, which is why some travelers love it and others leave after a day.

The real trump card is location. Pompeii is a short ride away, and Positano, Sorrento and Capri are all reachable by ferry or train. Rome can do Pompeii as a day trip, but it is a long day. If ancient ruins near Rome appeal more, check our list of the best day trips from Rome before you commit.

Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast from Naples

From Naples, the Circumvesuviana local train reaches Pompei Scavi in about 30 minutes for USD 4 (EUR 3.30). Trains run from early morning until late evening and are often crowded. Note that the faster Campania Express tourist train was suspended from October 1, 2026.

Ruins of ancient Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius in the background

Pompeii tickets are now nominative and capped at 20,000 entries a day. Pompeii Express (the ancient city only) costs USD 23 (EUR 20), and Pompeii+ with the suburban villas costs USD 28 (EUR 25). From mid-October to mid-March, last entry is 3:30 p.m., so start early.

For the Amalfi Coast, NLG ferries run from Naples Beverello port to Positano from April 1 to November 3, 2026. The crossing takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and costs USD 36 (EUR 32) one way. Outside that season, plan on the train to Sorrento and a bus along the coast.

Safety and the chaos factor

The US State Department rates Italy at Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” with the advisory last updated May 23, 2025. That rating covers both cities. Day to day, Rome’s risk is pickpocketing on crowded buses, at Termini and around the big sights. Our guide on whether Rome is safe covers the specific hot spots.

Naples feels rougher. Scooter bag-snatchers are the classic problem, and pickpockets work the Circumvesuviana and the area around Napoli Centrale. Carry a cross-body bag on the side away from the street, keep your phone in a front pocket and do not wander the station area late at night.

Verdict by traveler type

First-timers: Rome. Spend at least three nights there, then add two in Naples if Pompeii is on your list.

Couples: Naples as a base, then move to Positano or Sorrento.

Families: Rome. Kids under 18 get into the Colosseum free, the city is easier to handle with a stroller and the traffic in Naples is stressful with small children.

Budget travelers: Naples. The tourist tax tops out lower and meals cost less. Pompeii is cheaper to reach from Naples than as a day trip from Rome.

Return visitors: Naples. You have done the Vatican; now see the south. If you are still weighing other Italian cities, compare Milan vs Rome or Rome vs Venice.

Where to stay

Naples, Centro Storico: Best for food lovers and budget travelers who want pizza on every corner and a short walk to the sights. It is loud at night.

Naples, Chiaia: Best for couples and families. It is the more polished seafront area, with easier access to the Beverello ferry port for Capri and Positano.

Naples, near Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi): Best only for a one-night stopover before an early train. The area is convenient but rough after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Naples worth visiting if I have already been to Rome?

Yes. Naples is a completely different side of Italy: rawer, cheaper and centered on food rather than monuments. It is also the practical base for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. It is only about an hour from Rome by high-speed train.

Which is cheaper, Rome or Naples?

Naples is generally cheaper. Its hotel tourist tax runs USD 3–7 (EUR 3–6) per person per night versus USD 3–11 (EUR 3–10) in Rome, and food in Naples is known for value. Big-ticket sights cost about the same: Pompeii Express is USD 23 (EUR 20) and the Colosseum standard ticket is USD 20 (EUR 18). Book trains early to keep transport costs low.

Can I do Naples as a day trip from Rome?

You can, since the high-speed train takes 55–70 minutes each way. A day trip works for pizza and a walk through the historic center, but it is a poor way to see Pompeii or the coast. If ruins or Positano are the goal, sleep in Naples for at least two nights.

How do I get from Naples to Pompeii?

Take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to the Pompei Scavi stop. The ride takes about 30 minutes and costs USD 4 (EUR 3.30). Buy a ticket at the station or tap a contactless card at enabled turnstiles. Book your Pompeii entry online first, since tickets are now in your name and daily entries are capped.

How many days should I split between Rome and Naples?

For a one-week trip, give Rome three or four nights and Naples two or three. That covers the Colosseum, the Vatican and the historic center in Rome, plus Pompeii and one coastal day from Naples. If you add Positano or Capri, take a night from Rome rather than rushing the south.
