Cancun beats Hawaii for most East Coast and budget travelers: a nonstop from New York takes about 4 hours versus roughly 11 to Honolulu, and a Cancun all-inclusive averages USD 454 a night with food and drinks. Hawaii wins for West Coast travelers, hikers, snorkelers and anyone without a passport book. Pick Cancun for value and easy beach time, Hawaii for scenery and variety.

Flight Time and Airfare From East vs West Coast
Geography decides this one for many people. From New York, Google Flights lists the fastest nonstop to Cancun at 4 hours 6 minutes, and typical round-trip fares of USD 335–590. A nonstop JFK to Honolulu runs about 11 to 11.5 hours, and Expedia shows round trips on that route spanning USD 648–2,752 depending on season. From Chicago, the fastest Cancun nonstop is about 3 hours 35 minutes.
The West Coast flips the math. Los Angeles to Cancun is about 4 hours 36 minutes at best, while LAX to Honolulu is about 5 hours 42 minutes, and Expedia lists LAX-Honolulu round trips from USD 371. For Californians, Hawaii costs roughly one extra hour of flying.
Cancun stays on Eastern Standard Time all year, so it is the same as New York in winter and one hour behind in summer. Hawaii is 5 to 6 hours behind New York, which wrecks a short trip.
Hotel Costs: All-Inclusive vs Room-Only
This is where Cancun pulls ahead on value. Kayak’s current data puts the average Cancun all-inclusive at USD 454 a night, from about USD 304 in October to USD 492 in December, and that rate includes meals and drinks.
Hawaii is mostly room-only. The Hawaii Tourism Authority’s July 2026 hotel report put the statewide average at USD 398 a night: USD 290 in Waikiki, USD 579 in Maui County and USD 762 at luxury properties.
Then stack up to 18.712% in combined state TAT (now 11% after the 2026 Green Fee), county TAT and excise tax, plus resort fees and parking. A USD 290 Waikiki room lands near USD 344 before anyone eats.
Hawaii visitors spent an average of USD 272 per person per day in August 2026, according to DBEDT’s latest visitor statistics.
Cancun’s main add-on is the Visitax, MXN 283–285 (about USD 15) per foreign visitor, paid online. Converted at USD 1 = MXN 18.28.
Passport and Entry Rules
Hawaii is a domestic flight. You need a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport, per TSA’s REAL ID rules.
For Cancun, the State Department says you need a passport book to fly to Mexico; a passport card is not accepted for air travel. Every family member needs one, kids included. Mexican authorities now issue the FMM entry form digitally.
Safety is a real but manageable gap. The State Department rates Mexico Level 2 and asks visitors to Quintana Roo to exercise increased caution and watch their surroundings after dark in downtown Cancun. Most resort guests never leave the Hotel Zone.
Beaches, Water and Things to Do
Cancun has the softer sand and that pale turquoise Caribbean water, calm on the Bahia de Mujeres side and wavier along the Hotel Zone’s east-facing beaches. Day trips cover Isla Mujeres, cenotes and the ruins at Chichen Itza. Our list of the best things to do in Cancun covers what is worth leaving the resort for.

Hawaii has more range: volcano hikes, Na Pali cliffs, sea turtles, world-class snorkeling and road trips like Hana. See the best things to do in Hawaii by island.
If your ideal day is pool, beach, swim-up bar, repeat, Cancun does it cheaper. If you get bored by day three, Hawaii keeps giving.
Weather and the Best Months to Go
Cancun’s hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with peak risk in August through October. Sargassum seaweed typically hits from spring through summer, worst around June to August. That makes December to April the safe window, and our guide to the best time to visit Cancun breaks it down month by month.
Hawaii is warm year-round. Winter brings big surf to north-facing shores and more rain on windward coasts, but it rarely ruins a trip. For specifics, check the best time to visit Hawaii.
The Verdict by Traveler Type
– First-timers abroad: Cancun. It is the easiest international trip from the US, and a resort removes most of the friction. – Couples: Cancun for an adults-only all-inclusive on a set budget; Hawaii (Maui or Kauai) for a honeymoon with hiking and scenery. – Families: Hawaii if anyone lacks a passport or the kids are small, since there is no border and less food-safety worry.
Cancun if you want one price covering every meal. – Budget travelers: Cancun, especially from the East Coast or Midwest. – West Coast travelers: Hawaii. The flight is barely longer and the jet lag is mild.

Getting from the airport to your hotel
In Cancun, the ADO bus is the budget option from the airport into the Hotel Zone, with fares depending on the exact stop and operator but generally landing somewhere in the USD 3–12 range, more if you book a direct door-to-door shuttle.
A private transfer or taxi costs considerably more but drops you right at your resort with no transfer at a downtown terminal; most all-inclusive guests book a private shuttle in advance rather than figuring out the bus with luggage after a long flight.
In Honolulu, the equivalent decision is rental car versus shuttle versus rideshare. Renting means a stop at the Rental Car Center, reached by a free shuttle bus that runs around the clock, before you drive yourself into Waikiki.
Skipping a rental car in favor of a shared airport shuttle to a Waikiki hotel typically runs in the USD 16–25 per person range, with a wait of 15 to 45 minutes for the van and several hotel stops along the way, so budget extra time over a private ride.
If your plan is to stay put at one resort and not drive, skip the rental car on either trip. Cancun’s Hotel Zone and Honolulu’s Waikiki are both walkable once you are checked in, and a rental car sitting in a hotel parking garage racking up a daily fee is one of the easiest line items to cut from either budget.
Rideshare fills the gap on both trips for anyone leaving the resort for a meal or a day trip without a car. Uber operates in both Cancun and Honolulu, and it is generally the easiest way to reach a dinner reservation outside the Hotel Zone or a beach park outside Waikiki without committing to a rental for the whole stay.
Keep in mind that Cancun’s Hotel Zone traffic backs up badly at peak times, so a rideshare across town can take noticeably longer than the map distance suggests; building in extra time for an evening reservation avoids a rushed arrival.
Whichever destination you pick, confirm your transfer plan before you land rather than after. Arranging a shuttle, rental car or rideshare pickup from the arrivals curb after an overnight flight is a worse version of the same decision you could have made calmly the week before.
Where to Stay
– Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera): the long, narrow strip of beachfront resorts between the lagoon and the sea. Best for first-timers and all-inclusive fans. – Costa Mujeres / Playa Mujeres: quieter, newer resorts north of the city with calmer water. Best for couples and families. – Downtown Cancun (El Centro): cheaper hotels and local taquerias, a bus ride from the beach. Best for budget travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to go to Cancun or Hawaii?
Cancun is usually cheaper, especially from the East Coast. Kayak’s average Cancun all-inclusive is USD 454 a night including food and drinks, while Hawaii’s statewide hotel average was USD 398 room-only in July 2026, before up to 18.712% in lodging taxes and resort fees. Hawaii visitors also spend about USD 272 per person per day overall.
Do I need a passport for Cancun but not Hawaii?
Yes. US citizens flying to Mexico need a passport book; the passport card only works at land and sea crossings. Hawaii is a domestic destination, so a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or a passport is enough to board. If your passport expires soon or a family member has none, Hawaii avoids the problem entirely.
Is Mexico or Hawaii better for a family vacation?
For young kids or anyone without a passport, Hawaii is easier: no border, US medical care, and lots of free beach parks. For older kids and a fixed budget, a Cancun all-inclusive often wins because meals, snacks and pools are included in one price. Families on the East Coast also save about 7 hours of flying each way.
When should you avoid Cancun?
Think twice about August through October, the peak of the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season, and about June to August if seaweed would ruin your trip, since sargassum is usually heaviest then. Prices drop in fall for a reason. December through April gives the best weather and clearest water, at the highest rates.
Is Cancun really worth it compared to Hawaii?
For a relaxing beach week at a predictable price, yes. Cancun’s flights from the eastern half of the US are short and its all-inclusives remove daily spending decisions. It is less worth it if you want hiking, volcanoes or diverse islands, or if you want to wander freely after dark; Hawaii delivers more variety per day.
