1. Vedettes du Pont Neuf – the 1-hour guided cruise

This is the cheapest straightforward option with live commentary. The operator’s site lists the one-hour guided cruise at EUR 15 for adults and EUR 7 for children, a web promotion against regular prices of EUR 17 and EUR 9. A live guide speaks French and English,.

Boats leave from the Square du Vert-Galant, at the western tip of Ile de la Cite. The mid-October timetable showed departures from 10:45 am to 9:45 pm.

For early evening, a Champagne and Happy Hour cruise from the same quay is EUR 29 (regular EUR 31), lasting 1 hour 15 minutes, leaving at 6:45, 7:15 and 7:45 pm.

Downside: no cancellation policy is shown on the page, only a link to the sales terms.

Boats leave from Port de la Conference, at the foot of Pont de l’Alma on the right bank. From October to March, boats leave every 45 minutes until 4 pm, then every 30 minutes until 9:30 pm. From April to October, they leave every 30 minutes from 10 am to 10 pm.

Tickets are valid for any departure on the chosen day and for one year. A sightseeing ticket with a 20 cl bottle of champagne starts at EUR 30.

3. Bateaux Parisiens – Eiffel Tower or Notre-Dame departure

Bateaux Parisiens lists a one-hour commented cruise at EUR 18 for adults and EUR 9 for children (regular EUR 20 and EUR 10). It lasts 1 hour and includes an audio guide played through your own phone and headphones.

The operator’s practical-information page gives the address as Port de la Bourdonnais, 75007 Paris, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, near Bir-Hakeim and Trocadero metro stations. Cruises also depart from Notre-Dame, daily, but the page does not print times.

A Notre-Dame and Champagne cruise is EUR 39 for adults and EUR 30 for children aged 4 to 11: one hour, live commentary, a glass of champagne, beer or a soft drink, and a sweet treat.

Downside: banner text showed lower “from” prices than the cards, so trust checkout. No cancellation rule is published.

4. Batobus – the hop-on, hop-off boat

Batobus is a river shuttle, not a narrated tour. The official site sells a 24-hour pass at EUR 23 for adults (EUR 13 for children) and a 48-hour pass at EUR 27 (EUR 17 for children).

There are nine stops, including the Eiffel Tower, Musee d’Orsay, Notre-Dame and the Louvre. A full loop takes about 1 hour 42 minutes.

The first boats leave at 10 am. The last departure from the Eiffel Tower stop is 5 pm Monday to Thursday and 7 pm Friday to Sunday in the off-peak season, or 8 pm in peak season.

Downside: Batobus tickets are non-refundable and cannot be changed once activated. You also get less commentary than on a guided boat.

5. Dinner cruises – a full evening on the water

A dinner cruise turns the loop into the evening itself, and later sailings show the illuminations. Prices differ a lot by operator:

– Bateaux Mouches: the 6 pm early bird is listed from EUR 90 (1 hour 15 minutes, back at 7:15 pm). The 8:30 pm sailing lasts 2 hours 15 minutes, with menus from EUR 135 to EUR 480. – Bateaux Parisiens: the 6:15 pm cruise lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, from EUR 99 for the Etoile service (child EUR 40), up to EUR 174 for a front glass-bay table. The 8:30 pm cruise lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, back about 11 pm; its price was not shown. – Vedettes du Pont Neuf: Bistronomique dinner from Pont Alexandre III from EUR 59 (6:30 or 9:15 pm); Italian menu EUR 69; “Paris romantique” EUR 87; a dinner boarding opposite the Eiffel Tower EUR 82 (sails 9 pm, back 11 pm).

Dress code on Bateaux Mouches: smart dress for evening cruises; sportswear, flip-flops, bermuda shorts and baseball caps are not allowed, and boarding may be refused.

Cancellation: dining reservations on Bateaux Mouches can be cancelled for a refund up to 72 hours before sailing. Between 72 and 24 hours, you can move the date within six months, subject to availability.

Downside: early sailings leave in daylight in summer, so pick a later departure for illuminations.

When a Seine cruise is not worth it

Skip the cruise in these cases:

– You are short on time. On a 2-day trip, a museum slot may beat it. – You are traveling in winter. Cold decks and early darkness mean most people watch from inside the glass. – It is raining hard. Bateaux Mouches sightseeing tickets are non-refundable. – You want a great dinner. A set-menu cruise is a package; a restaurant on land may serve a better meal.

Instead, walk the free quays.
